Old Films for New

For this assignment, I have chosen to look at Beauty and the Beast. The original was one of my favourite Disney films as a child, and its recent remake still makes my list of favourite films of all time. Because of this, I feel as though it would be a good choice to explore these productions in closer detail. Beauty and the Beast, first released in the year 1991, is an American animated romantic fantasy. It is Disney's thirtieth feature-length film and, despite being produced in America by Walt Disney Pictures, the story itself is a French fairytale. The original version of this film was directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and stars Robby Benson – an American actor, singer and director – as the voice of Beast, and Paige O'Hara – an American voice actress, singer and actress - as the voice of Belle. The film's budget was twenty million US dollars, half of the budget of Disney's popular film The Little Mermaid, which inspired the production company to decide t...

The Theory of Films

Directors are very important as they oversee the film-making process and they make   all of the   final decisions   as to   how things   should be   done, and how their film should be presented. Some directors like to put their own personal stamp onto the films that they make, such as using similar colours or the same actors in many of their works. This is known as the auteur theory. Alfred Hitchcock is known for his auteur style that involves using camera angles to   replicate   a person's gaze. In subsequence, the audience become watchers. Additionally in some of his films, such as Rear Window, Rope and Lifeboat, the action   is restricted   to a single setting to create tension. This limits characters escape routes and it means that   all of the   drama occurs within a smaller space. Hitchcock films have also been known to take regular people into risky, unusual scenarios. For example, in Psycho, an average woman g...

Analytical Approaches to Film

Film Genres - Action - usually fast-paced and adrenaline pumping, films of this genre are known for their explosive and activity-filled scenes Romantic Comedy - films of this genre are known for their feel-good contact, well-lit scenes and humour based on believable circumstances ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is possible to determine a film's genre based on its tone and content. Similarly, use of props, costume and lighting can be used to set scenes appropriate for the genre. For example, a romantic comedy may use brighter colours and lots of natural lighting, whereas horror films are more likely to use darker colours and dimmer lights to create a suspenseful, moody scene. Colour is important in films as they have varying connotations, and can be used to send messages to the viewer. For example, in the 1975 American thriller "Jaws" uses the colour yellow wheneve...

Marketing of Music Videos: Lady Gaga vs. Adele / Artists' Change in Musical Direction

Lady Gaga brands herself as an edgier artist through her usage of makeup. In the given photo, her face is pale and her eyes are accentuated by heavy eyeliner. Acting as a complete contrast, Adele puts herself forward with a slightly more raw look. Her makeup is never heavy and her hair, in the given image, falls in healthy curls. This mirrors her music, which always feels very honest and real. Artists and their change in musical direction: Taylor Swift - country to pop Katy Perry - christian to pop Snoop Dogg - rap to reggae, then back to rap Tinashe - pop to RnB Nelly Furtado - pop to hip-hop Lil Wayne - rap, to rock, then back to rap

Radio Advert Report

Commercial radio focuses on generating profit; there are many ways commercial radio look to gain money; the main source of income is from advertising. For example, selling news casts. Additional ways that commercial radio makes money include user involvement - such as Capital FM hosting special events such as their 'Summertime Ball', and competitions - which lead back to the radio station's profit. In this assignment I will be analysing a radio advertisement that was produced by Barnardo’s, and released in 2015. This radio advert is trying to convey the message of how child abuse occurs behind closed doors, and that anyone can be a victim, regardless of social class, ethnicity and gender. It also shows that abusers will cover their tracks by making up seemingly legitimate stories to explain how the victim obtained their injuries. The style of my chosen advertisement is one of shock. The reason it falls under this category is because it speaks about...

Purpose - My magazine, Spotlight, aims to feature only the highest quality content to keep my readers engaged by - and loyal to - my product. It's purpose is to provide entertainment to film fanatics while delivering informative content in order to maintain a balance. My magazine covers action films as, not only am I familiar with the genre, but according to both my questionnaire and further secondary research it's very popular.                                                                                                                                                                   ...

Questionnaire Results Analysis

When I received the result back from my questionnaire, I discovered that it had been answered by more females than male, which makes me wonder whether women would be more inclined to purchase my finished product. There was a fifty-fifty split between the people who bought and didn't buy film magazines regularly, but I wasn't surprised by this as film magazines only typically appeal to film fanatics. While there are many people who enjoy watching them, not everyone is as interested in the details that go into making films, and so the market for these products is very specific and niche. Three quarters of the people who had filled out my questionnaire favoured the name "Spotlight" above the two other options. Because of this large response, I decided to use this name as it not only seems to be the most eye catching, but it generated a lot of appeal. Appeal is key as, if people aren't drawn to my magazine, they won't be willing to spend their money on it. I wasn...
